Verbal Problems

Steps in solving mathematical problems:
1. identify the given
2. know what is ask
3. represent the quantities using variables.
4. translate English language to mathematical symbols.
5. analyze the problem for the solution
6. and don't forget to check your answer

Example.
Try this....
A. Find three consecutive integers whose sum is 465.

PEMDAS Rule

The rule that is higher than the MDAS rule is the PEMDAS rule.
This stands for: Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction.

The rules to follow are: first, perform the operation inside the parenthesis, then simplify exponentiation and lastly perform the MDAS.

One must master first on using the MDAS rule before he can master the PEMDAS rule.

Example:

 25 - {5 + (35/7 x 2^2 + 10) -2} + 3^2 - 6       Solve 35/5, 2^2 and 3^2 together and copy the rest.
= 25 - {5 + (5 x 4 + 10) - 2} + 9 - 6
= 25 - {5 + (20 + 10) - 2} + 9 - 6                           20 comes from 5 x 4 which is inside the parenthesis
= 25 - {5 + 30 - 2}+ 9 - 6
= 25 - 33 + 9 - 6
= -8 + 9 - 6
= 1 - 6
= - 6

Give a try:

1. - { 2^3 + [ - ( 5^2 x 5) + 100^1/2 - 10 ] x 2^0}
2. 44 - (5 x 6) / 3 + ( 3^3 / 3)^2 - ( 7^3)
3. 1 + { 67 + 9^2 - 100) - (4^2 x 2)/2}

MDAS Rule

What is MDAS Rule?

MDAS Rule is actually a rule to follow when we are going to solve a series of operations, that is the four  fundamental operations of real numbers. MDAS rule stands for MULTIPLICATION, DIVISION, ADDITION  and SUBTRACTION.

How are we going to use this rule?

First we have to perform all multiplications and divisions before performing the additions and subtraction.
In performing all multiplications and divisions, we should solve or read it from left to right. Do not try to solve any multiplication or division since it is easier or convenient to you to solve. Always solve from left to right whatever that comes first.
Follow the same process for additions and subtraction though we can apply the rule of signed numbers or we can also use the commutative law of addition.

Example:

1) 10 x 5 / 25 + 8 - 2 x 2 + 4 - 3
       In solving this we perform first 10 x 5 together with 2 x 2. Giving us;
           50/25 + 8 - 4 + 4 - 3
Then we have to solve 50/25 before performing the addition and subtraction. So we have,
           2 + 8 - 4 + 4 - 3 which is equal to
          10 - 4 + 4 - 3. And the final answer is
           7.

Try these:

1)  15 + 35/5 x 8 + 12 - 7 x 4 / 2 - 6
2)  105 / 3 - 35 x 2 + 35 - 70/2 + 35
3)  50 x 3 + 50/2 - 25 + 25/5 x 10

Problem 1.

Twins Leo and Lea were playing with sea shells.

Lea told her twin Leo, "Give me one shell so we shall each have the same number."
But Leo replied, "No. You give me one shell so that I shall have twice as many as you will have."

How many marbles did the twins have before any exchange was made?

math magic

Have you tried making magic?
How about Math Magic?
Would you like to try this and reveal the magic?
Here it is.....

Let somebody think or choose any number.
Let him do the following

Add 6 to the number (the number he choose).
Multiply the sum by 2.
Subtract the number from the product twice.

Tell him that the final answer is 12.
Surprise?
How did the magic works?
Wanna tell me?
